Alexandra Kettering
Currency's Regal
Alexandra, 26, spends her days changing money for an endless stream of tourists at the Thomas Cook currency exchange booth in Times Square and her nights in her Dumbo live/work loft constructing very large (and very bad) abstract paintings. Born and raised in Manhattan, she headed to the West Coast for college but left during her sophomore year after her parents were killed in a car crash. Alex drifted around the country for several years, living with various clumps of other young aspiring artists, earning a living through her carpentry and woodworking skills and spending most of her money and energy on her sculpture projects. Alex recently tossed off sculpture, at which she had some skill, in favor of painting, at which she has no skill and less talent, as her preferred artistic medium.
She returned to New York several months ago at the behest of her adored older brother, Michael, who is constantly urging her to start considering sensible career options. A VP in Merrill Lynch's global investments division, he bribed her with the apartment to come back to NYC and find a day job. His connections got her the interview at Thomas Cook. A position as a glorified cashier wasn't what he had in mind, but it suits Alex fine -- she has no interest whatsoever in money, but enjoys the people-watching opportunities the job affords.
