Rest of Reading assignments:

Sanjek (The Future of Us All): Chapters 1,2, (Skim 3,4) view pictures after p 103, 9,10, Conclusion.

Vergara (New American Ghetto): The strength of this book is photo journalism. Look at the pictures- especially those of NYC (Mostly Bronx and Brooklyn) and Newark, NJ. Occasionally the text is appropriate but the pictures educate about places and times most people never visit.

Jacobs (Death and Life...) Before this book it was rare to find urban geography-like books with much intelligent reference to NYC. (I continue to believe that many skilled urban geographers were overwhelmed or afraid of NYC.) Jacobs was (and still is - but in Toronto) a keen urban observer that can translate street knowledge into concepts. Some of this book is dated- and I certainly don't agree with some of her conclusions. Pick 4 chapters that sound interesting and note particularly the way NYC examples help to define her principles.

Another Walk:
ETHNIC COMMERCIAL
